  • Fertilizer Dosage - Osmocote

I have been around the internet and back again on fertilizer dosage for Osmocote Flower and Vegetable on potted plants, this will be my first year using it on my potted figs. I know alot of people use it and have seen some recommendations for SIPS, but was wondering what people are using for standard pot top-dressing. I have seen some recommendations for 1 tablespoon per 1 gallon (Al Tapla recommended that for 5-1-1), and i plan on top dressing as my mix is already predone.

Not sure if it would be helpful to create an article on fertilizer dosage that people can put their recommendations for different fertilizer regimens (like Pete has done before).

    Thanks!

May the Figs be with you!

There's a phto on the package showing what it should look like. You're supposed to use a lot of it. Way more than I did last year before I saw the picture.

Bob - how much did you use last year? The dosage instructions are not that direct for "potted trees". As Jamie mentioned below, basically 3 TB per 2 Gallon Pot, and that would need to be scratched into the top 2-3". A lot of us supplement with liquid fertilizer throughout growing season, so Possibly the 1/2-1TB per gallon is safer if doing liquid nutrients.

Osmocote does not need to be scratched into the soil.

I noticed there is also another Osmocote (indoor outdoor formula) and this one supposedly has micronutrients in it as well.. The directions suggest 1 scoopful (1 scoop =3tbsp) per 2gallon pot, & 1/2 of that on an indoor plant. Not sure if anyone has tried this version but I picked a big bag of it up to use in the SIP's I'm now beginning to make.. Well.. Okay.. I'm making my husband make them but same difference right? Lol! Wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this osmocote product? I was always kinda stumped on the amount to add for either version of Osmocote because it never seemed like enough when following the recommended dose on the pkg.. Hmmm.. Great question Matty

Jamie - i purchased DynaGro Foliage Pro to supplement my CRF with, it has all the macro and micro nutrients a plant needs and people swear by it on the fig boards and GW. Plan on using it weekly on top of the CRF, its actually pretty cheap when you think how many gallons it makes.

Matty I've been using Foliage Pro & totally agree.. Its great stuff.. Ive been nursing what's left of the bottle I have but its definitely time to reinvest in a bigger bottle this time.. I also use flora-nova. It seems pretty good too but I don't like the consistency of it. Foliage pro is so much less messy & easier to use in my opinion

This is the application rates for the Osmocote Plus 15-9-12. Scroll down and it gives the amount to apply in grams to different size containers.

Thanks Wisner! Those application rates are perfect and i think its exactly what Jamie and I were looking for. It shows the low/medium/high dosage rates and tells you what to use depending on if your supplementing liquid nutrients and/or have quick draining medium. I will probably use medium dosage amounts since i have quick draining medium (5-1-1-1) and am supplementing liquid nutes as well. Unless anyone else disagrees?

Also to note, the dosage amount for the 14-14-14 and 15-9-12 are almost identical, so the 15-9-12 PDF is much better guide.

Yes thanks a bunch Wisner! Exactly what we needed and I totally agree Matty, this was so much more helpful than the directions on the bottle/bag
