  • Negretta

    Hello everyone,

I'm having some trouble finding pictures of Dieseler's (Martin) Negretta. All the threads on Gardenweb & F4F of his have deleted pictures. I did find newnandawg's thread here: http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/figs-ho...etta-2015-main

Is that Dieselers? I know there are two versions. Unk Negretta is similar to VdB the other I'm totally unsure of. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.

Ross my Negretta came from Maggie and I believe that is where Martin's is from. This is a picture from last year breba. I'll have to see if I have other pictures. All the leaf stems have a reddish cast to them.

Thanks! Do you have anything of the inside, Tony?

This is the only picture I could find of the inside. I'm not sure but I think it's a breba.

Whelp. There's definitely two version's of Negretta. Martin's version kind of reminds me of a mission type. @Tony & Marcus - what do you guys think taste wise? Worth pursuing for more than pretty red tips?

Ross I think it's worth a try. As they say taste is very subjective to each of us. What may be an excellent fig for one person, it may be just so so to another. I thought it was good enough to keep and gave it one of my bigger pots. As for the red stems, they just add a bit of color to the overall appearance.

This is the truth. I can't tell you how many times I see somone say a fig is great then somone say they are just ok or year to year it changed for the same person. There are to many Veriables. Negretta had a good spot on my deck last year in the sun and it was one of the best figs I had. So many figs ripened like crap because of shade. At my old house everything had all day sun and everything always tasted high quality.

Do you guys think Jason's Unk Black Ischia is the same as Dieseler's Negretta? They both have red tips/stems. Fruits look similar too.

Ross, I don't have Negretta but I do have a second year Jason's....
After this fig had floated around a few years, as you know Herman seemed to think it was Negretta, but with no direct trail linking them no one will ever know for sure.
Mine has markedly red buds/leaf stems like those in Tony's pic above, even as much as Raspberry Latte. It has a fair number of figs that I hope to try. I live pretty close to Tonycm, maybe we can get together in fig season and compare them.
And I have a baby rooted from a green cutting last month...

For comparison, I went outside and snapped a couple of crappy iPhone pics of my Jason's Unk Black Ischia (JUBI)

Last, a pic of an immature fig, out of focus, but showing the early coloration of these figs similar to VdB, Nero 600m, and Valle Negra. This fig is perhaps a bit smaller than of a dime at this point, they have been purple from the start. On all of these pics you can see the typical red stems. Click image for larger version

Ed. That's wonderful stuff there. And I had no idea Herman thought the same.. here I thought I couldn't get anymore suspicious, haha.

Ross -- Based on my experience, this is a sign of old age setting i. You hear something from someone (e.g., Herman); then you forget that you heard it; then you resurrect the idea as your own; then you discover to your surprise and delight that somebody else agrees with you! Don't worry about it. Just enjoy the affirmation.

Here are a few pics of my Negretta which came from mggnva. In my book, this is a very small fig but excellent.

How would you describe the taste, newnandawg? Is it in any way similar to VdB?

                • #15
Personally, I think they are the same. If not the same.. very similar and not worth the trouble of getting both. I also have suspicions that they are both very similar to VdB.

of course VdB is so good that having multiple named varieties that are very similar can't be all bad
I have VdB(3rd year), Valle Negra and Nero 600m (both 2nd year) and the Jason's Unk (2nd year) all with figs on them to compare this year. All 4 have purple tinted little figs on them, only the Jason's has the pink stems

I can say that "my" Negretta and "my" VdB are not the same. The leaves, fruit and taste are different.

Just judging by the leaves, it's not the same as VN or Nero 600M. There are two leaf variations on these VdB family varieties, but neither one looks like the pics above.

                  Are they at all similar?

This is my list right now. Hoping to compare both Negretta & Negretta Unk next year for myself.

                    1. Negretta = Jason's Unk Black Ischia

                    2. Unk Negretta = Ischia Black RW & Black Provence
