  • A new member intro and a thank you!!

    Hello fellow fig lovers,

I have been lurking on your forums for a while and well you guys have me addicted (wife not happy)! Anyways wanted to thank everyone for the valuable information shared on this site. Its really a great wealth of amazing information.

I live Irvine, California (10a) and well that means a tiny yard and HOA rules against planting certain trees (ie Figs). So containers it is. I just have 2 small trees, a Panache and Italian Everbearing from a local nursery and 3 cuttings (Desert King, Gillette and a Neverella) from ebay. Anyways just wanted to say hello and thank everybody on this forum.

    Sam

Buy her a few trees, that always works. Welcome to the forum. Oh, the HOA doesn't say that the pots have to have bottoms in them do they? And just remember to watch out for Wills.

Welcome! You live in a great fig-growing zone, shame about the HOA restrictions. Maybe Hershell is right and you can use bottomless pots?

Do you know why your HOA has a restriction on figs? I'm just curious. I live in a HOA, and as far as I know, there are no fig restrictions. But since you mentioned it, I haven't seen anyone with a fig in the front yard anywhere either.... (because mine's about to be COVERED in figs in the backyard)
Want: Marseilles Black, Col de Dame (any), figs that do great in zone 9b (new to figs, so no fig trades, but have other plant types)

I believe it's mainly because they we thought to have a invasive root structure. The homes here are packed quite tightly together so I can understand the concern. Although today I went driving around the neighborhood and I did spy one true in a side yard.

Oh. Except figs don't have an invasive root structure? They are mostly surface roots, or they can't be successfully grown in pots... something a lot of people on this forum do.

Figs (Ficus carica) is listed as an invasive plant in California, due to the presence on fig wasps and viable seeds.

welcome Sam I am in a HOA and I don't think they know what a fig tree is. HOA are a pain the the hinny. Head of architectural controls lives next to me but he is a real sweetie a little chocolate cake now and again keeps him grinning. does it say in writing that you can't have a fig tree or does it specify what you can have what about back yard

The hoa documents that only certain trees/plants can be planted without written approve. When I called about planting figs, they told me that anything with an invasive root structure are forbidden.

Sam, you would be amazed at the size fig tree you can grow in a 45 gal nursery pot with enlarged holes in and around the bottom. My hugh old fig tree that measures about 16 feet across and 10 - 12 feet high was origionally growing in a #6900 nursery pot, about 15 gal. The roots grew threw the drainage holes to establish itself as an in ground tree. It now has several trunks 3 - 4 inches in diameter.

wow that's huge... thinking about doing a setup lilke bill figs sips daisy chained to a reservoir for easy watering (and water savings). Only thing that holds me back is worry of PVC leaching chemicals.
