  • Sals EL GC 2016 Main

This is a five year old in ground tree that receives about 10 hours of sunlight daily.

This plump little fig is very sweet with just the slightest hint of berry. The skin is
tender and no seed crunch. I gave it an 8 on 1-10.

Thanks for sharing the photos and info...

Could you please post a few leaf photos? Thanks.

Sal's is one of my favorite "Mount Etna Types" though the mature leaves have a slightly different shape compared to most of the typical Mount Etna Types and Hardy Chicago. It has consistently been one of the sweetest figs each season.

Nice! I was hoping someone would post on this variety.. My first year tree has quite a few figs on it, so I'm looking forward to them even more now! Thanks a bunch Mike!

Jamie, I really like this fig. It is a great producer even though it is not
one of the glamour names. I hope yours does well for you.

            Mike,
Thanks for sharing the leaf photos...

This is a "workhorse" and underrated fig.
Last season I didn't even stop to take photos of the ripe figs because they were eaten as they ripened.

                Yes,
Sals has shallow sinuses and rounded lobes compared to most 'Mount Etna Types'.

It is a great fig and productive and very sweet , but in the course of necessary thinning of the herd because of space issues we went with the richer tasting Mount Etna types like MBVS and TV etc.
I liked it a lot , but my wife found it too sweet and not rich enough. I kind of miss it , but then there isn't room for all of them here.

Hi Kerry, thanks for your comments. The thinning process is happening here also. Since it is in ground along with many other Mt Etna types it will stay. I have a list of the planned departures. Most of them are still in containers.

Another reason why its a keeper for me, other than its sweeter light berry flavor is that it appears to be hardier than the other Mount Etna types. It usually has the least die back (if any) of all the cultivars stored in the same location.

Pete, it is a hardy variety. It has bounced back from single digit die back twice.
Last winter our low temps were only in the teens a couple of times and
there was no back for this in ground tree. It is producing a pretty good
                      crop at this time.

The one I am disappointed in this year so far is Takoma Violette. Not
a good crop the ones ripening are quiet small.

I've compared Sal'sEL/Gene to Takoma Violet and MvsB with all three growing in-ground. Sal's is slightly faster growing than the other two and I agree that it does seem to be slightly more cold hardy than those two as well.

Don't have Takoma Violet, but agree that its more prolific than Marseilles Black VS.
