  • 60+ fig cultivar, Mulberries, Persimmon, Pomegranates, Misc Fruiting Plants

Okay the first part of this is a repost from the main fig forum. But the trade list is below. Mostly geared to local pickup and ranging widely from 20 Gal figs and down. I actually hate shipping and prepping stuff as I don’t think it’s really worth the hassle in many cases, and I always worry how live plants will make it in transit, and in most cases doesn’t make sense on shipping the larger plants regardless for either you or me. If I have traded with you in past I might make an exception if you really want something shipped. I still have planting room but some things I don’t need duplicates of and some of my favorites I don’t need 5 of so I can keep trying new things. Most of these are pretty available regardless, but some good solid figs, but don’t look for the “NEXT Greatest Fig EVER!!!!” Because remember and I quote myself "I have the next big fig. I am the only one that has it. I am not talking about it and I am not sharing it." And yes it is guarded by Bears. I doubt I could ever be bribed.” Unless God speaks to me and commands I share it. A couple of local folks I have traded with a lot know they can have anything I have for free if they want.

Most are in fine shape, some are root bound, and a couple might even need some TLC. Not more than a couple of anything. If you see something that interests you let me know I will let you know more detail on it’s size source condition etc… , but it might take me awhile to get back with you. I have good records but as they got moved back in garage and packed in there can’t really access or find but probably out again in next day or 2 depending my back and knees give the okay. Even when out might take awhile to locate, and not leafed out yet so will know better in a few weeks. What am I looking for? I really don’t know besides a few hard to find types, but not really expecting those. I will listen and just like to try different ones I have saw good reports on, doesn’t need to be HTF just don’t be offended if I don’t want the trade as I have a bunch of other figs and other plants just not listed as I don’t have for trade right now. I doubt I will move many plants, but I am getting close to taking to a local market, trying Craigslist and selling things for the 1st time but thought I would at least offer here 1st as trades. A couple folks asked If I would sell outright and I think I am at the point I will cross that line. I have only sold 2 figs ever both benefit auctions on the forum here. This will always be hobby for me and it starts to feel like work when money involved so I will see how it goes. I would ask that if you are interested in actually buying something that be handled in PM as I believe that would best. I will try and talk you out of anything shipped out and not locally picked up, as while I ship cuttings I stress to much shipping live plants

Yesterday I made the move from all my garaged plants to outside in the driveway but not to their summer homes yet. Lots and lots of pots in the hundreds and I kept thinking what am I doing to myself? Many are duplicates I have propagated, some are recent additions, and some are ones I just have not dared planting for winter yet. Not just figs, but Persimmons, Pawpaw, Pomegranates, Kiwi, Olives, Citrus, Mulberry, Goumi, and more. I was pretty much finished and my wife drove in and said “have you seen the weather?” I said yes the rain will do them good, and she stated she’d just driven through massive hail and they say there is a lot more coming tonight. I was like to hell with it, whatever happens happens, and I sat down, but as I rested viewing everything I had protected all winter I realized - get on your feet boy! Winter is almost past. Why carry the ball down to the 1 yard line and punt. Why play for 3 quarters and be up by 25 points to lose the game in overtime. I stated because I’m a Falcons Fan. I slapped myself for that remark and the adrenalins gave me strength and I “Rised Up” and moved everything back in much of it struggling in the rain and I felt good about myself because I beat the hail. I went to bed exhausted but feeling better knowing I had done what I could. The hail never came. This morning I was looking at the forecast realizing everything looks good for a move outside except my back. I was angry and started walking through the orchard talking out loud to myself. I do this a lot and it’s where most of my thinking takes place, and soon my head rose to the sky and I started speaking to God. I do this a lot as well. Last summer during drought I would be asking lots of questions directed to the sky while out watering trying at least to keep things alive. It’s probably best I moved out rural a few years ago less folks to make comments about the crazy plant guy. This morning I was looking for answer, why do I do this to the point where I turn enjoyment into grief? Am I a hoarder? Am I mentally stable? Again my head turned to the Heavens and I asked for guidance and then it happened, I thought I was struck by lightning and lost my thoughts, I heard a voice and I was so shocked I did not understand. I asked what did you say and again God spoke and this time I heard more clearly but I was beyond shocked, as God’s voice was the voice of a woman so I still did not hear clearly. With my head still to the sky I whispered God please forgive me but could you repeat that one more time? Then in a loud thundering tone I heard in a voice amazingly similar to my Wife. “YOU NEED TO SELL SOME OF THIS CRAP - ARE YOU DEAF?” Humbled and shaking I fell to my knees and lowered my head. I asked God if she would consider Trading plants for penance for my sins and she said as long as you are fair and just and to go forth be ye fruitful, and propagate bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

So here at GODs command is pretty close to what I think I have to offer in trade. Most I propagated either by cutting or graft, Fig are all from cutting. A few things I actually purchased.

Thanks Guys Some of the stuff as been in pot too long, but I will be honest on condition probably to fault.

Now Tony, Don’t be so polite trying to correct my spelling subtly Gionbo not Giombo is how it was sold to me. Are they the Same? I am certain they are but Chestnut Hill lists it as Gionbo. I have fruited both. Dr. Dunstan imported Kaki early on or maybe it was his son it’s detailed on their website. I think I was probably a translation issue when brought in. I have fruited Giombo grafted from USDA UC Davis scion and as well a Giombo from Just Fruits and the JF&E proved to be incorrect as a large nice non-astringent. They were good and replaced even though it was I think 3 years until it fruited but a setback on what I was doing. Neither Giombo or Gionbo too be confused with Giomba which I as well Grafted from USDA scion. If you facebook see my posts here on them: https://www.facebook.com/groups/pers.../?query=gionbo
I hope that link works if not here is some pics and to your question it’s a good very large astringent and think I mention in on a persimmon video overview I posted here some time back. I still probably like Saijo and last year Hao River better for pure Kaki Astringents, but my Gionbo is younger those fruit in pic from a potted 3 gal purchased last year so I expect it to improve. It had good flavor but retained astringency longer than most, will have to see it that’s the case in years to come. BTW the Gionbo and Sheng I am offering for trade is from Chestnut Hill and not grfated by me and you folks need to be on watch this spring last year I saw Dunstan Chestnuts and some persimmon at select Walmarts. I have them already but picked up couple reduced at end of season. Labeled by Chestnut Hill so no worries of Walmart mistakes. I dealt with Bob Wallace and Chestnut Hill way back in 1990? When I watched my small citrus grove freeze. I was looking at alternatives and went back in with around 100 of their grafted chestnuts and lots persimmons and some other less common fruits. I never got to see the full results as the paying job took me elsewhere.

Thanks, Phil... I really wasn't trying to be subtle or anything at all... it is a cultivar I have been looking at. I have been growing hachiya as well as a number of others purchased from England's and elsewhere and Giombo was just one that I heard about and was interested in. My favorite hands down is hachiya which is difficult to grow in my 6A area but I keep it in a big container and shuffle it and am happy to get a half dozen fruit from it. My Dad had one in his yard just on the outskirts of Manhattan and because it was growing between two brick 2 family homes it was well protected and produced hundreds of pounds of absolutely incredible huge fruit each fall... As the folks got older they sold the house and the tree stayed with the new owners and I think still grows there now 10 years later...

I want those poms! It's a shame you didn't take cuttings, Phil. Especially of Gissarskii Rozovyi. I hear that one is one of the best in terms of taste & the rest of those are pretty hardy I believe!

Ross, Some of the POMs are in 1 gal and could be shipped without a great deal of trouble If I was threatened with the right fig plants. They are actually the last started of my POM Project. that have not went in ground yet. I try to size them up to good size 3 Gals before planting out in ground. I have north of 35 Cultivars most spending their 2nd winter in ground. At least I did last Fall. I think I saw a low of around 12F 1st winter. This winter I saw 4F. A few did not like last winter so think the cultivar listing has likely dropped but that was always expected. The ones I have in 1 gal I believe as follows
            Entek Habi Pomegranate
            Gissarskii Rozovyi Pomegranate
            Kara Gul Pomegranate
            Sakerdze Pomegranate

Gissarskii Rozovyi would be the only one I'm after. That and another I already found were the only two poms on my list (for now). I just don't have the space for them as of yet. What varieties are you after?

I do have a 1 gal St Rita. and I think 3 Gissarskii Rozovyi. They are all small including the St Rita I could send pic if interested in PM. Gissarskii Rozovyi might be a smaller plant in habit as it seems to be 1/3 size of others started the same time. Even the 2 I moved up to 3 GAL that I will be planting out are small. It's reported to taste like Lemonade. I have not tasted but a few of my POMS yet. Almost All I started from USDA UC DAVIS

They would be available for Local pickup but not shipping. The goumi seedling are a mix from parents Sweet Scarlett and Red Gem, Not the actual propagated parents. unknown Holland shed is One of the few finds semi-local I have found. Holland is the family name of the old homeplace I acquired it from, so nothing to do with the country.

You have quite a few varieties of pretty much everything. I am trying to add lots of fruit to my place. My husband has started a beekeeping hobby. I like to plant things. Some of what I plant survives. Some doesn't. I would like to add jujubes, mulberries, more Asian persimmons, plums , some cherries, kiwis, and assorted berries.

Looks like I waited too long before looking at Giombo availability at Chestnut Hill... They are all out... Not many other places sell this variety that I can see... I see that JF&E still has some available.... not sure if they are still considered reliable since the change of ownership although they seem to have done pretty well making their JF&E Black Madeira fig variety available this past season....

strudeldog - Phil.... do you have any small Giombo trees that you would sell and that can be shipped to NY or perhaps some scion wood?

                            Thanks Guys,

Tony. I actually do have 2 Gionbo in pot. For some reason Chestnut Hill spells with a N some places spell with a M, the origin of these trees is Chesnut Hill, but I am sure they are the same as I have from Just Fruits as well and both have fruited. Even the descriptions describe the same tree. They are in too large of pots to ship The very tall probably 2 foot tree pots you see pecans in sometimes and probably a 1 foot diameter much larger than the tree pots JF&E sends in. I very well may be grafting persimmons this spring in smaller pots. I have 100 root stock on order, but not sure if they will be grafting size this year, and grafting to just potted bareroots was not real successful a few years ago for me. I do have some scion if you want to PM about that.

New here and first post. I have Japanese Fuyu Persimmons and several figs I'd like to upgrade for some nonastringent Persimmon cuttings to graft.
I am willing to take cuttings from my Fuyu for a trade here folks. She is Very hardy Also she is growing in Red Clay.
I live 20 miles South of Palestine Texas and about 20 miles North of Crockett Texas
Zone 8 and Everything grows here. My Fruited Mulberries (3) are over 15 feet tall and I have some cuttings I intend to graft onto all.
